Implementing privacy on the Ethereum base layer is complex and slow. The implementation of privacy has become easier with the Layer (L2) ecosystem. Projects like Aztec Network, StarkNet and zkSync are the primary vehicles that are spearheading Ethereum privacy. Their system of privacy works by bundling transactions offchain, then generating a single zero knowledge proof of their validity which they then post to the Ethereum mainnet. This provides scalability and a native architecture for privacy.

ZK rollups on Ethereum L2 are expected to evolve from scalability solutions to full fledged private computation environments in 2026. We should expect DeFi applications running on these L2s to be common. These applications will include shielded lending pools and dark trading pools.

Account abstraction

This privacy system on the Ethereum ecosystem allows for programmable smart contract wallets. These smart contracts will enable developers to build-in privacy preserving features like stealth addresses and private transaction routing at the user level. It takes a different approach to ZK rollups.

It is important to note that Ethereum does not have a single path to privacy, but it has a decentralized ecosystem of privacy options. This gives users options based on their needs.
