Introduction

Market Structure is the backbone of Forex trading. Before indicators, EMAs, Fibonacci, or patterns — the first thing a trader should understand is how price moves.

When you understand market structure, you can:

  • Read the chart without indicators
  • Spot reversals early
  • Avoid false signals
  • Enter trades confidently
  • Improve accuracy dramatically
Three main elements define market structure:

  1. Swings (Highs & Lows)
  2. BOS (Break of Structure)
  3. CHOCH (Change of Character)
This post breaks them down clearly so you can apply them instantly.

1. Understanding Swings (Highs & Lows)

The market moves in waves, not in straight lines.

In an Uptrend:

  • Price makes Higher Highs (HH) and Higher Lows (HL)
HH → HL → HH → HL → uptrend continues

In a Downtrend:

  • Price makes Lower Highs (LH) and Lower Lows (LL)
LL → LH → LL → LH → downtrend continues

Your first task is to identify whether market is making HH/HL or LL/LH.

If you can identify this — you already understand 50% of trading.

2. What is BOS (Break of Structure)?

A Break of Structure occurs when the market continues in the same trend direction by breaking the previous high/low.

TrendBOS Meaning
UptrendPrice breaks previous HH → trend continues
DowntrendPrice breaks previous LL → trend continues

Example:

Price breaks the previous high → Uptrend is still strong
Price breaks the previous low → Downtrend is still strong

BOS = Trend continuation signal.

3. What is CHOCH (Change of Character)?

CHOCH signals a potential trend reversal.

A CHOCH happens when price breaks the opposite swing level.

Previous TrendCHOCH Means
UptrendPrice breaks previous HL → trend may reverse to downtrend
DowntrendPrice breaks previous LH → trend may reverse to uptrend
CHOCH = Early reversal signal.

4. How to Use Market Structure for Entries

For Buy Entry (Bullish Market):

  1. Identify Uptrend (HH + HL)
  2. Wait for pullback to Higher Low
  3. Look for bullish confirmation candle
  4. Enter Buy

For Sell Entry (Bearish Market):

  1. Identify Downtrend (LL + LH)
  2. Wait for pullback to Lower High
  3. Look for bearish confirmation candle
  4. Enter Sell
This prevents chasing price or entering too early.

5. Market Structure + Liquidity = High Accuracy

Smart money loves to:

  • Push price above previous highs (to grab liquidity)
  • Then reverse and show CHOCH
  • Then form a new trend
So always watch:
✅ Liquidity grab
✅ CHOCH
✅ Then enter on the retest

This is a professional trading approach.

6. Example Scenario (Very Important)

Trend: Uptrend
Price forms:

  • Higher High (HH)
  • Higher Low (HL)
  • Then another Higher High (HH)
Suddenly price sharp drops and breaks the previous Higher Low
This is CHOCH → Trend likely reversing.

Price then pulls back to form a Lower High → Enter Sell.

This is how smart traders catch reversals early, before retail traders react.

7. Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Trading without checking trend
❌ Entering trade right after BOS or CHOCH (too early)
❌ Not waiting for retest
❌ Using structure only on small timeframes (too noisy)

Solution:

  • Identify structure on H4 or H1
  • Enter on M30 or M15
This increases clarity and accuracy.

Conclusion

Understanding Market Structure allows you to:

  • See the real direction
  • Enter trades at logical levels
  • Avoid emotional and random entries
  • Trade confidently without relying on indicators
Remember:

Price tells the story. Indicators only translate it.
Master structure → You master trading.
